Having a badge reel as opposed to a lanyard to hold your ID during clinicals is preferred, because it reduces the chance of your ID being dipped into something you don't want it to be. A pen is a must have to take notes during clinical rotations, along with a Sharpie to date and initial procedures such as IVs and catheters...and having these clipped on to your badge ensures you always have them handy and they're not misplaced.
